When do you ever see rugby union betting headlining on the bookies’ lists? World Cup once every four years? Heineken Cup final once a year?

But for the Six Nations the bookmakers have no alternative other than to put the sport right up front.

And so we see the bookmakers chasing your cash by offering prices on a whole slew of markets they wouldn’t normally be pricing up at all.

The bookies aren’t stupid. But a mistake they often make when pricing up these high profile internationals is to try to equate what happens in international rugby to what normally happens in club rugby – and more often than not that approach just doesn’t work. The Six Nations is a much higher grade of competition.

For instance – odds compilers trying to work out how many penalties and conversion kicks will be missed in specific Six Nations matches or in the whole competition by looking at the averages for misses in normal club competitions.

That’s not a good idea – the compilers are forgetting that that the standard of kicking in these international matches is so much higher than we see in ordinary club games. And when that approach is used we can end up with great value bets – in a whole series of markets.

With all this money sloshing about, the betting industry has become insanely competitive: the more markets you can offer as a bookie, the more chance you have of opening more accounts - and that's the real prize.

You see, in their desperation for more, more, more, they're relying too much on young, inexperienced odds compilers who simply don't have the nous to properly "sew-up" a market the way I could.

In the old days I'd often have to intervene at the last minute to stop the most God-awful gaffes ending up on the chalkboards!
