It was 4:20 am on Sunday 18/03/07... I'd just watched young Brit Lewis Hamilton make his F1 debut in the first race of the season in Australia. He finished 3rd - a fantastic achievement in what was his first EVER Grand Prix...
But I wasn't interested in backing Lewis for the drivers' championship... I had my eye on a completely different market... The BBC Sports Personality of the Year...
Aside from the Rugby World Cup, I knew that there was no massive "showpiece" event to get the public voters excited... and no outstanding candidate for the award who was head and shoulders above the rest...
Straight after Sunday's race, while the bookies were still snoozing, Hamilton was available at a best-priced 16/1 for the BBC award. That's great value: 16/1 for a talented youngster who I knew would feature in the headlines all season long!
